June 6 Report

Saturday

Click for MapThis morning the temperature was very cold. When I left the area my windshield on BAK 1 was covered with moisture and I used the wipers to clear. Immediately after starting to move I noticed additional spots of moisture that I needed to clear. When I turned on the wipers I suddenly realized that moisture now had frozen. The temperatures that I saw on my thermometer were 27.6 degrees and later at the starting line about 36 degrees. Someone mentioned that the forecast for today was for about 75 degrees with south west winds.

At the start, the wind started picking up and at starting time there was a significant aiding wind for the riders. Many mentioned at Wallace our lunch stop that they were averaging above 20 mph. A few of us visited the Ft. Wallace Cemetery and found that it has a very pretty setting where you can see forever. Those of found some real inspiration in seeing the sights that seem to go on forever. It seems that many riders were finished for the day very early some as early as 11 am. And after most riders sleeping late this morning that was a suprise to me. Nearly one third visited the Fick Museum in Oakley where they were able to view many collections of sharks teeth collected by Vie Fick just a few miles south of here near the Monument rocks.

I have a special message for the Atwood Grade School Computer Lab students. Suzanne Loewen sends you this message " I made the first days ride about 70 miles! See ya soon. Keep working hard in the lab!" I will add that she was still smiling. You should all look for more from her later in the week. Maybe on Thursday evening or Friday morning. Many riders have mentioned that this has been the very best day of bicycling that they have every had. Hope we can provide some more this week.
