Kolassal Route Director's Update: June 14
Kolassal Route Director's Update: June 14
On June 10th, two horse trailers made a couple of trips to the Colorado line transporting
the BAK participants. We are talking about long fifth wheel trailers with side doors. They
didn't look all that clean and the BAK'ers looked cold when exiting. You can never plan for
all the situations at an event. A lot of BAK'ers were starting to show up for the official
BAK start. The luggage trucks for the Alluring and Kolossal routes were parked side by side
in a dirt road. The area was covered with BAK'ers, vehicles and their bikes. The worst
thing happened. A tanker truck wanted the road. I thought the truck was just passing
through. He wanted the dirt road to drop-off some fertilizer at a large plastic tank. The
BAK activities were stopped. The luggage trucks moved out into the fields, BAK'ers parted
the area and the tanker started making the turn. He made the turn in good shape, missing
everything. The truck pulled forward and we went about the official start of bak 1995.
The Kolossal route had finished their first day for a distance of 74 miles. Just north of
the high school was a stock car race track. The noise level increased a lot with the stock
car racing action. The riders were concerned about the noise affecting their nights sleep.
Experienced rider Tim Miller has been riding BAK several times, but this year is the first
time he has been "pooped" on. At one of the Kolossal sag stops there were hoards of cliff
swallows nesting in the culvert & there the incident happened. The bird dropped & escaped.
Jr. Route director Amy Delamaide has been having several young men pursue her during this
week. Her comments were "don't they understand, i'm on vacation with my family & my dad is
a police officer."
Assistant Route Director Dean Schroer has sort of been having withdrawals. Dairy Queen
type. Yesterday he was only able to hit the DQ 3 times. The last time he went to the DQ he
didn't inform his wife Marilyn, then she found out and was disappointed because she would
have liked to have a cherry limeade!
