BAK Director's
Report: June 14
Today, the winds were still from the south, but at only about 8 to 10 MPH. The temperature today started at about
78 degrees and climbed to 92 degrees this afternoon. Most of the bikers left rather early today so that they could finish the
day before the temperatures and winds became unbearable.
I left Kingman early with Danna Fechter, a 15-year-old that fell yesterday. She really didn't need to SAG today, but it seems
that my offer to ride in BAK 1 (my red car) was too much to resist. We had a gigantic Cinnamon roll in Kingman and started to follow the
route to Wellington. Along the way, we stopped to take pictures of both the riders and of old barns. We stopped at the
refreshment stop in Norwich for a cookie and a cup of coffee. We then proceeded to Wellington by way of Conway Springs where
we met Norma and Sherry for lunch at Corneo's, a regionally famous Mexican Restaurant. After lunch, I proceeded to South Haven
and joined the Kolossal Route and from there to Arkansas City where we are staying at the High School.
Occasionally there are some pretty strange things that happen on BAK and this story is one of them:
It was related to me (from the Bodacious route) that one of our riders, Mike Patterson, a doctor from Hutchinson who,
the other day while in the restroom, called to another rider "come here quick!". The other rider went over to him and the Dr. Patterson
remarked:"look it's clear!", referring to his own urine! Well, that night at the meeting, this story was repeated to the group and the
doctor was presented with a waterbottle to make sure that he consumed plenty of liquids the nest day. So, the following day at the meeting, he asked to be recognized and proceeded
to present that same bottle, filled with an obviously yellow-tinted liquid within. He explained that this was the proper color of urine
and the sat the bottle down and continued to talk about hydration and the need to drink often during the day.
Then, he referred to something that he had in a bag and asked the leaders to look.
In the bag, they found two Baby Ruth candy bars wrapped in toilet paper! And at that time, he picked up the
bottle (displayed before) and proceeded to take a drink. Needless to say, this grossed out many of those present!
