BAK Director's Report: June 15

Today, I traveled from Arkansas City to Sedan by way of "Hernia Hill", Maple City and Cedar Vale. Many of the bikers claimed not to have noticed "Hernia Hill". I told them this morning the the slight easterly wind that we were experiencing wouldn't bother them because now we're out of the "bumpty-bumps" and were into the hills!

At about 9:00 am the winds had changed to southerly at about 12 gusting to 20. Later, the winds continued to swing to the Southwest and at about the same speed. Temperatures this morning were about 72 and reached the mid 80's this afternoon and were expected to be lower than normal. A bit of trivia about the weather today is that the record low for this area is 46 and the absolute record high for the United States is 127 degrees at Ft. Mojave.

Early today a rider had a fall and was taken to the hospital in Arkansas City with a possible broken leg. The hospital x-rayed it and no break, only a large contusion. Ice was applied and the rider can ride tomorrow is she desires. One rider's wife went into labor and he had to be found so that he could return home.

In Cedar Vale the Chamber had a food booth with sandwiches, drinks cookies, and other things to eat. A chruch group also had hot food in a restaurant for sale.

The traffic along the area is picking up with many cars and trucks to share the road. Also we now have the Alluring and Kolossal routes together here in Sedan. The city of Sedan is showing a royal welcome to the riders. Even though this is a small city of about 1,265 people, they had police helping the bikers make a left turn to the schools along with completely closing the streets close to the schools.

"Freewheel", the Oklahoma ride, finished here in Sedan about a week ago and we have been told that the weather didn't cooperate with them and that they had rain, hail, tornadoes, along with high water and a general bad weather week. We also heard that they started with about 1,500 people and finished with about 500.

We will have enertainment tonight in the city park and hamburger stands are set up near the school. Sedan also has several other nice eating establishments. We are expecting to have a fun evening here in Sedan tonight.

Tomorrow we will have all three routes gather at Parsons for our last night together.
