BAK Director's Report: June 13
On Tuesday morning, I left Coldwater fairly early and enjoyed the scenic 42 miles to
Medicine Lodge again. There I met Norma and had another breakfast at Sandy's. The breakfast
at Sandy's was a BAK breakfast and included your choice of four things from her menu and
drinks. Really nice, and has a large seating area. The bikes were scattered all along a
whole block on both sides of the street. Norma will be going to Harper tonight, Sherry McKee
(the third BAK Director) will be in Anthony, and I am in Kingman.
The morning temperature was about 57 and this afternoon it had risen to 83 to 84 degrees
with a fairly strong southerly wind. I am with the B route tonight and they had several
sections of road that went south. This group seems mostly to have survived the winds quite
well.
The meeting tonight was run by Amber Fechter, She introduced the Mayor and the Pride
committee Chairwoman who handed out Kingman Buttons. Amber Presented the Mayor with a book
"What Kansas means to me" for their school of city library. The meeting was almost exactly
the desired 30 minutes and they seemed to have many funny things to relate to each other.
One of the entrants from the east related his story of flying here, seeing his brother,
meeting a police officer in Topeka and buying a mountain bike at the police auction for
the trip.
Yesterday we had our first serious accident; an older gentleman fell in a construction area
cracked his helmet and broke four ribs. After a short stay in the hospital he will be
heading home to Iowa.
Team Spud (one of self-named "teams" of BAK riders) seems not to be in good graces with the Bodacious route, so this
evening we had a team meeting to tell them what people are saying and attempting to come up with a solution
on how to improve their image. Ithink we'll succeed and help make them well liked by the other riders.
