Early this morning, the temperature at Sublette was 43 degrees.
I drove the few miles to Satanta where the Alluring route was staying for
breakfast with Norma (my wife) and to enjoy the jalapeno egg dish that
they usually prepare when we are at their school. The 4-H group prepared
breakfast for the bikers and served biscuits and gravy. About a dozen small
girls were serving drinks and cleaning the tables. They were really cute and
the food was excellent as usual.
Besides being quite cool (I swear I had frost on my windshield!) we had a
completely clear and beautiful sky with a slight breeze from the Northwest.
The group slept later today and they seemed to be very happy that the day
appeared to be so nice. They left town on an extremely smooth downwind
road and when I left, riders were scattered all the way to the town of
Plains. Outside of Plains were signs inviting the riders to the city park
where they had cold drinks and grilled hamburgers for sale. Then, a few miles on,
(14 to be exact) in the overnight destination of Meade, the local museum had
drinks and cookies. A civic group also had a another lunch in the city park.
I joined the Kolossal Route at Meade and continued with them to Ashland
through some very pretty county. They rode right through a BIG, natural
sink hole, called "Big Basin" which is a mile in diameter and 200 feet deep.
More beautiful wildflowers accented the reddish soil in some of the cliffs
west of Ashland. The temperature this afternoon was 71 degrees.
Yesterday, the Kolossal route had a truck lunch between Elkhart and Liberal,
and just after setting the lunch up, they experienced a downpour for a few minutes.
Some people waited out the rain only to find that two miles down the road the ground was dry!
At the Alluring group meeting last night, an award was given to a young lady
for getting her lip stuck on or in her waterbottle!
Tomorrow will be my short day; I will only go to Coldwater
(about 30 miles from Ashland) where I will rejoin the Alluring route for the evening.
Today, with the really nice weather, people are in very high spirits and seem
to be enjoying themselves.
More tomorrow.
