BAK Director's Report: June 9

Friday after leaving nearly on schedule from Wichita we arrived at the starting points of Elkhart and Johnson City. I left the caravan early and drove the road backwards from Liberal to Elkhart to check on reported unsatisfactory road conditions. I found that the road was much as we had experienced in January when we drove over it on our measuring trip. About eight miles were torn up for repair but were well packed and should cause no problem foor the riders tomorow on their way to Liberal.

On our way out we experienced downpours until just east of Dodge City the clouds finaly broke and blue sky started to show. When we arrived at Elkhart and Johnson City the sun was out and the sky had no clouds to be seen. the Temperature was 77. This evening in Johnson City we were experiencing a slight easterly wind and quite cool temperatures. I heard that the expected low for tonight should be about 52 degrees.

Along the way I noticed many fields of wildflowers and interesting plants. At one time I viewed a golden bronze colored field with a touch of purple. And later a similar field of golden flowers that made a very bueatiful sight. I expect that since we have had an abundance of rain this year we will experience many wildflowers.

Other sights of the way to the start were I passed a field of prairie dogs and could see the cute little thing standing on their hill looking at me checking me out as I passed them by. A shor time later I passed a Highly fenced pasture with a good number of elk some with their stately antlers showing and them prancing along. As you well know we will be traveling through the Cimaron National grasslands tomorrow and there will be many signts to enjoy aong the way.

Tonight I am staying in Ulysses and will return to the start at the state line at about 8:30 am.
