Summary:

  • Full-time, contract position during BAK tour week and does not allow for participation as a cyclist
  • Pay for this position is up to $3,000, as determined by the Biking Across Kansas Board of Directors
  • Tour week: June 9 through June 17, 2023, plus pre-tour planning as needed
  • Serves under the direction of the BAK Executive Director

Reporting to the BAK Executive Director, the Tour Emergency Management coordinator’s role is to facilitate the safety of staff, volunteers, and participants, respond to and minimize the impact of unexpected incidents and emergencies during the Biking Across Kansas bicycle tour event June 9-17, 2023.  

Founded in 1975, Biking Across Kansas (BAK) is an annual, eight-day, bicycle touring event crossing the state of Kansas. BAK promotes health and wellness through bicycling, the history and beauty of Kansas, and the warm hospitality of the Kansas towns and people.

Responsibilities include:
Act as the primary incident management coordinator for BAK tour week to minimize the impact of unexpected incidents and emergencies on participants, staff, volunteers, and the organization. (Note: This is a full-time BAK staff position, requiring the selected person to drive a vehicle and does not allow for participating in BAK as a cyclist.)

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and/or other volunteers and staff to draft, edit, and/or update Emergency/Incident Response Plan.
  • Collaborate with lead volunteer medic to
    • Update Medical and Safety Guidelines as needed.
    • Review qualifications of volunteer medics.
    • Communicate with volunteer medics prior to and during the tour.
    • Identify and inventory needed medic supplies.
  • Offer experiential guidance to the Executive Director and other BAK leadership through unexpected incidents and emergencies.
  • Respond/go to incidents as identified/triaged by Tour Communications Coordinator, Executive Director, and/or other BAK staff members needed.
  • Assess unexpected incidents and emergencies; confirm has been made with or contact appropriate First Responders if required; and take other appropriate action if needed.
  • Complete incident reports and appropriately file for each incident and/or accident.
  • Check on and track status of injured and/or ill participants.
  • Enforce the Biking Across Kansas Injury/Illness Policy and COVID Compliance by working with the Executive Director to ask participants to leave the tour when necessary.
  • Keep BAK Executive Director apprised of all incidents, persons involved, and action taken/required.
  • Participate in BAK volunteer staff meetings during the BAK tour.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Has participated in BAK or other organized road bicycling events
  • Works as a first responder, a healthcare professional, or in emergency management
  • Must be at least 25 years old, have a valid U.S. driver’s license, and have a good driving record as required by insurance requirements.
  • Communicates well and maintains professional composure at all times. 
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and critical thinking
  • Can take action without direct supervision
  • Is smartphone, computer, and iPad savvy
  • Appreciates and excels at collaboration with other team members
  • Is willing  to travel with BAK during tour week and participate in the same communal living arrangements made available to other BAKers
