Summary:

  • Part-time contract position (variable time commitment throughout the year). Does not allow for participation as a cyclist during BAK event
  • Term: June 17, 2023 to July 31, 2024, with the option for renewal.
  • The annual salary for this part-time position will range from $15,000 to $20,000, depending on the successful candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications, as determined by the Board of Directors.
  • Serves under the direction of the BAK Board of Directors.

Reporting to the BAK Board of Directors, the BAK Executive Director provides leadership for all aspects of planning leading up to, and administration during, the annual Biking Across Kansas bicycle tour event June 7-15, 2024.  

Ideally, the selected candidate will be available to work with the outgoing ED during spring 2023 and attend BAK 2023 (June 9-17), in order to observe, assist and learn. A stipend will be provided.

Founded in 1975, Biking Across Kansas (BAK) is an annual, eight-day, bicycle touring event crossing the state of Kansas. BAK promotes health and wellness through bicycling, the history and beauty of Kansas, and the warm hospitality of the Kansas towns and people. The Executive Director position is a unique opportunity to serve Kansas and the loyal current and former riders who cherish the experience and community fostered by BAK.                     

Responsibilities include:

  • Attend and co-lead, with Board President, virtual monthly BAK Board meetings.
  • Coordinate with Board officers to ensure adherence to organization bylaws and the requirements of the organization’s 501(c)(3) status.
  • Organize and facilitate in-person and/or virtual BAK volunteer meetings. 
  • Provide leadership for the volunteer and possible temporary paid staff leading up to and during the eight-day BAK tour. This may include, but is not limited to:
    • Securing rental vehicles and acquiring supplies in the week before the tour.
    • Overseeing and participating in the preparation, packing, loading and unloading of supplies.
    • Collaboration with Board members to ensure smooth functioning of daily activities during the tour.
    • Communication with volunteer and/or paid staff to manage unexpected incidents and emergencies.
    • Leading all-participant meetings during the tour.
    • Serving as a public face of the organization (along with Board members and other volunteers, as appropriate) in communication with the media, prospective and current riders and their families and host communities.
  • Manage and coordinate planning, marketing, preparation, implementation, before, during, and after the BAK tour.
  • Coordinate other BAK-related events as determined by the BAK Board of Directors.
  • Administer daily operations and communication for the organization throughout the year, as needed.
  • Recruit and develop volunteers.
  • Lead visionary and strategic direction for the organization with Board collaboration.
  • In cooperation with Board members, maintain corporate records for organization.
  • Develop and manage vendor relationships.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Has participated in BAK or other organized road bicycling events.
  • Appreciates Kansas culture and history.
  • Can accommodate working in a part-time position.
  • Resides in Kansas.
  • Is enthusiastic and energetic.      
  • Is able to drive and assess BAK routes and visit communities with own vehicle (gas reimbursement provided) during the months leading up to the tour.
  • Has experience managing or supporting a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
  • Has event planning experience in bicycling, running, or other large athletic events. 
  • Possesses outstanding organizational skills.
  • Is a collaborator.      
  • Values and excels at communication and customer service.
