Summary:

  • Full-time, contract position during BAK tour week and does not allow for participation as a cyclist
  • Pay for this position is up to $2,000, as determined by the Biking Across Kansas Board of Directors
  • Tour week: June 9 through June 17, 2023, plus pre-tour training
  • Serves under the direction of the BAK Executive Director

Reporting to the BAK Executive Director, the Tour Communications Coordinator coordinates BAK communications full-time during the Biking Across Kansas bicycle tour event June 9-17, 2023.

Founded in 1975, Biking Across Kansas (BAK) is an annual, eight-day, bicycle touring event crossing the state of Kansas. BAK promotes health and wellness through bicycling, the history and beauty of Kansas, and the warm hospitality of the Kansas towns and people.

Responsibilities include:
Act as a conduit of communications during BAK tour week to facilitate the accurate and timely transmission and triage of information. (Note: This is a full-time BAK staff position, requiring the selected person to be primarily stationary at BAK overnight stops and does not allow for participating in BAK as a cyclist.)

  • BAK phone communications
    • Staff the official BAK phone number to receive calls from riders and record/track significant details.
    • Assess and prioritize participant issues/requests and triage information to BAK Tour Incident Response Coordinator and/or the BAK staff member best qualified/fit to assist and/or provide solutions.
    • Follow up with BAK staff to facilitate assistance/solutions.
    • Log communication (e.g., phone calls, texts, etc.) and the response/action taken on issue/request.
    • Keep BAK Executive Director apprised of significant situations in a timely manner throughout the tour.
    • Participate in BAK volunteer staff meetings during the week of BAK.           
  • BAK text communications
    • Collaborate with BAK Executive Director to draft and send BAK participant text messages.
    • Reply to text messages as needed.
  • BAK Information Board communications
    • Daily update the details to be included on the BAK electronic Information Board.
    • Daily set up the electronic Information Board.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Has participated in BAK or other organized road bicycling events
  • Communicates well and maintains professional composure at all times
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and critical thinking
  • Can multi-task as well as take the appropriate action with little supervision
  • Values customer service and good communication
  • Appreciates and excels at collaboration with other team members
  • Is smartphone, computer, and iPad savvy
  • Is willing to travel with BAK during tour week and participate in the same communal living arrangements made available to other BAKers
