BIKING
ACROSS KANSAS invites you to share in the ideal cycling conditions in
Kansas during the week of June 8-15, 2002. Enjoy 8 fun filled days and
approximately 500 miles of cycling across the state, with a choice of
three routes. All routes will start at the Kansas-Colorado border and
end together at the Missouri border.
PURPOSE:
BAK '02 is not an endurance contest, a race or a test of stamina. It
is a recreational and social rally for cyclists, each rider should plan
to set a pace agreeable to his or her own degree of expertise. All capable
riders are welcome.

BEFORE BAK '02
CONDITIONING:
To enjoy BAK '02 to its fullest you need to be in good/excellent riding
condition. It's time now to become serious about conditioning both yourself
and your bicycle. Ride as many miles as you can--the more miles the
better. Short rides won't do as much good as the longer ones. It is
important to ride as often as possible--every day if you can. Add some
long rides on weekends of 40 to 50 miles. One suggestion is that you
should be able to do 30 miles in 3 hours or less. But we have found
it is more enjoyable to ride at a faster pace.
SAFETY & HIGHWAY RIDING:
Inexperienced highway riders should study safety precautions and State
laws. Most generally, riders will break up into small groups that are
not a traffic hazard. The State law prohibits bicycles from impeding
traffic and does not allow riding more than two abreast. Single file
riding, near the right-hand edge of pavement, is by far the safest way
to travel on the highway. Most of the roads on BAK tours are lightly
traveled, but don't let that cause you to lower your guard. Highway
riding requires constant attention all the time. RIDE DEFENSIVELY!
DURING BAK '02
FOOD:
BAK '02 will provide some meals. Those will be announced later & listed
on your route guides. All other meals will be your responsibility. We
notify restaurants along the way in advance. The celebration dinner
will be catered at 12:00 Noon. All you can eat and drink. One dinner
ticket is included with each entry. All others must be purchased for
an additional cost. Purchase tickets in advance for friends and relatives
joining you for this celebration.
FACILITIES:
You will be allowed to bring bicycles in for the night under normal
circumstances. In case of stormy weather, you may be asked to move your
bicycle outside for safety reasons. Plan to clean dirty bicycles before
bringing them inside. Repair work must be done outside. Facilities must
be in the same, or better condition, than we found them. This means
trash in the trash barrels, and no litter lying around the grounds.
BAK has a reputation for being excellent guests and we work hard to
maintain that reputation. Alarm clocks and radios are discouraged in
the sleeping area. There shall be no cleats or smoking inside the lodging
facilities. Kick stands shall not be used inside the schools.
LODGING:
Lodging is included in the entry fee. Facilities - auditoriums and gymnasiums
in towns along the route include showers, room to unroll sleeping bags
on the floor, and quarters for bicycles. Riders of course must provide
sleeping bags, towels and other personal items. There is usually space
outside lodging facilities for tents, if so desired.
WEATHER:
BAK '02 is truly a rain or shine ride - we will be moving each day regardless
of weather. Rain, although not good for bicycle bearings, won't hurt
the riders as long as they stay warm. If we should have a real cloudbuster,
temporary shelter should be available at the cities or farms that we
will be passing. We don't recommend riding in heavy rain.
SAG SERVICE:
Personal baggage will be transported. You will be allowed two bags not
to exceed 40 pounds total and not more than three cubic feet each. BAK
tries to keep several vehicles on the routes at all time to provide
water and fruit, as well as assistance with medical and mechanical problems.
Please don't forget to bring your helmet
LAUNDRY:
In the past, many people have visited laundromats or washed by hand
their riding clothing, so clean clothing was available every day.
Web:
Before the ride starts you may obtain updated information and get answers
to common questions, get route information, Motel lists , get additional
entry blanks and send E-mail to BAK Headquarters. Your family may track
the progress of BAK '02 from this web site and view daily updates and
photographs.
Information contained here is often a part of the agreements made with
city and school officials. Be sure you understand. You will be expected
to comply. Entries may be transferrable, but only after approval from
BAK Headquarters. If you have further questions, please contact:
